The Highway Vandal or Bandit

The scam here is that the highway vandal or bandit, who either owns or works for a service station, actually damages your car, and then you have fix it yourself. They victimize the motorist who stops for air or water. While the motorist may think that this is a routine stop, suddenly he or she discovers all kinds of damage, so the car now needs some repairs. For example, larcenous mechanics may spray or drip oil under a car and then claim it leaked from the victim’s car, requiring some fixes to whatever is causing the “leak.” The bandits may also puncture tires or cut water hoses and fan belts, so the victim has to buy new ones. In turn, motorists commonly fall for these schemes because they fear what may happen if they don’t make the repair, and when the scammer makes the unnecessary repairs, often the prices are inflated, so the motorist is doubly victimized.4
